A PATIENT and medical personnel faced a terrifying moment when the ambulance they were travelling in skidded off the road and crashed into a tree in Marang, along the Kuala Terengganu-Kuantan highway, at approximately midnight last night.

According to Marang District Police Chief, Supt Mohd Sofian Redzuan, authorities were alerted to the accident at 12:30 AM through the traffic complaint counter at the Marang District Police Headquarters.

Initial investigations revealed that the crash occurred when the left rear tyre of the Toyota Hiace ambulance, which belongs to the Ministry of Health Malaysia, suddenly burst. The vehicle veered off the road and collided with a tree. At the time of the accident, the ambulance was en route from Kemaman Hospital to Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital (HSNZ), carrying a 21-year-old female patient.

"In addition to the patient, there was a 28-year-old female doctor, two nurses, and a male driver aboard the vehicle," Mohd Sofian said in a statement today.

The police chief confirmed that the driver and all passengers sustained only minor injuries and were taken to HSNZ for further medical treatment.

Mohd Sofian appealed to the public to provide any information regarding the incident, urging anyone with relevant details to contact the investigating officer at 09-6182222. The investigation is being conducted under Rule 10 of the Road Traffic (Motor Vehicles) Regulations 1959 (LN166/59). – March 23, 2025
