PRIME MINISTER Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim expressed his deep concern for the people of Myanmar and reiterated Malaysia's commitment to providing support during this crisis.
And, following the recent devastating earthquake that has claimed numerous lives and caused widespread destruction to public infrastructure and property, the Malaysian government has announced a humanitarian aid package of RM10 million to assist the affected communities.
“As part of its efforts, Malaysia will also deploy a humanitarian mission led by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, which is scheduled to visit Myanmar next week.
"This aid reflects Malaysia's deep compassion and sense of responsibility, especially in our capacity as the Chair of ASEAN for 2025," said Anwar, in a statement posted on his Facebook page today.
"I have instructed the Minister of Foreign Affairs to lead a mission to Myanmar next week, where we will express our solidarity with the ongoing search-and-rescue operations. This includes efforts by Malaysia's National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA), which began deploying teams to the affected areas today."
The Prime Minister said ASEAN's collective efforts are essential in addressing humanitarian crises of this magnitude.
"The spirit of solidarity and cooperation within ASEAN member states is crucial in situations like this. The wellbeing of our people must be at the heart of ASEAN's actions, and it is important that we respond swiftly, effectively, and comprehensively," he added.
Anwar assured Malaysia would continue to engage closely with its ASEAN counterparts to coordinate the necessary assistance for Myanmar and ensure that the aid provided reaches those in urgent need.
"Malaysia will work alongside our ASEAN partners to ensure that every effort made has a meaningful impact on the victims and those affected by the tragedy," the Prime Minister added.
The Malaysian government's commitment to strengthening regional unity and advancing humanitarian efforts underscores its long-standing values of compassion, shared responsibility, and solidarity within the ASEAN framework.
Through these initiatives, Malaysia aims to contribute significantly to the relief efforts and help Myanmar recover from the devastation caused by the earthquake, he explained. – March 30, 2025
