SARAWAK PKR today said that the majority of Sarawakians will suffer more financial burdens if RON 95 subsidy rationalisation is imposed in the state.

The party said it supported Sarawak United Peoples Party (SUPP) in urging the Federal Government to exclude Sarawak from any RON 95 petrol subsidy rationalisation which will result in imminent RON 95 price hikes.

State PKR information chief Senator Abun Sui Anyit said the majority of urban Sarawakians are of the lower income group who uses small cars.

"Though the state government said Sarawak is already a high-income state, the reality on the ground is that majority of grassroot Sarawakians are in the middle income and bottom income (M40 and B40) categories as far as monthly income is concerned.

"In urban districts and semi-rural districts, the majority of vehicles used by the ordinary folks are small cars.

"In rural areas, the people need four wheel drives for the rugged terrain and they use diesel.

"Any rationalisation of RON 95 will surely cause price hikes that will result in even more financial burdens for ordinary Sarawakians.

"We support the call to the Federal Government to exclude Sarawak from the impending RON 95 subsidy adjustments," he told reporters here today.

Abun is also Sarawak Pakatan Harapan information chief.

PKR and Sarawak PH are the opposition in Sarawak while SUPP is a component of the Gabungan Parti Sarawak state government.

Yesterday, SUPP central leadership member Datuk Sim Kiang Chiok, who is chairman of SUPP Stakan branch, said it is not practical to have two different RON 95 price schemes for Sarawak - one subsidised and one based on market price - as this state have a general population of lower income people. – April 1, 2025
