EFFORTS to restore normalcy for residents affected by recent flash floods in Selangor are entering a new phase, with plans now shifting towards repairing damaged homes and arranging temporary housing.
“Next week, we will begin focusing on the rental process and repairs for homes that were damaged, supported by the commitment we have received from the Federal Government,” the official said.
Responding to claims that post-flood clean-up efforts had been disproportionately concentrated in the Putera Harmoni area while Kampung Melayu was overlooked, the official clarified that clean-up operations in Kampung Kuala Sungai Baru only began recently, following police clearance.
“Due to security reasons, cleaning activities in that area could only commence a few days ago after permission was granted by the police,” he explained.
“The layout of homes there is not as structured as in residential estates that are built according to planning standards. This has required additional effort and time to carry out the clean-up effectively.”
He also expressed appreciation for the high level of cooperation and volunteerism on the ground, particularly from Selangor’s youth who offered their time and energy despite it being the festive season.
Meanwhile, Subang Jaya District Police Chief ACP Wan Azlan Wan Mamat, during a safety briefing to volunteers, urged everyone involved in the recovery operations to adhere strictly to established standard operating procedures (SOPs) to ensure safety across the affected zones.
He confirmed that 100 police officers and personnel had been deployed to maintain security around the area, which has been officially declared a disaster zone.
“There have been no reports of theft or property loss so far, and we intend to keep it that way,” he said.
“All volunteers are strictly prohibited from entering the Ground Zero zone or entering homes that have been declared unsafe, unless authorised to do so.”
With clean-up operations continuing under close supervision, authorities are working to strike a balance between urgency and caution, ensuring that safety remains paramount while the path to recovery begins in earnest. - April 12, 2025
