THE Malaysia Competition Commission (MyCC) has launched a nationwide public survey as part of its ongoing review into the country’s digital economy, aiming to uncover anti-competitive behaviour and level the playing field in a sector increasingly dominated by global tech giants.
Running from July 2024 to December 2025 under Section 11 of the Competition Act 2010, the Market Review on the Digital Economy Ecosystem targets five critical sub-sectors: mobile operating and payment systems, e-commerce retail marketplaces, digital advertising services, online travel agencies (OTAs), and cross-sectoral data privacy and protection.
In a statement today, MyCC took aim at dominant international digital platforms, accusing them of using efficiency and innovation as cover for market control.
“Consumers and businesses are increasingly dependent on global digital platforms that disguise their dominance as efficiency and innovation. Yet beneath this convenience lies a web of market struggles, competitive barriers, and regulatory challenges that quietly dictate industry dynamics,” said MyCC Chief Executive Officer Iskandar Ismail.
The market review, he added, is a key step towards exposing the hidden mechanisms and imbalances shaping Malaysia’s digital ecosystem.
MyCC is urging the public, businesses, and industry stakeholders to take part in the survey, stressing that their input will inform future policy recommendations designed to promote transparency, fairness, and opportunity across the digital marketplace.
The survey will be open from May 7 to June 6, 2025, and takes approximately 15 minutes to complete.
