THE contest between Nurul Izzah Anwar and Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli for the deputy presidency of Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) should be seen as a healthy rivalry within a political family, says PKR vice-president Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad.
He expressed confidence that the race between two prominent party figures in the upcoming 2025–2028 party elections would not lead to division among members.
“This is democracy. If we approach it healthily—campaign cleanly and move forward once the results are out—then we understand what we are doing.
“The public is watching, and it will have an impact in the next general election. So, we must do our best to keep the party strong and ensure a positive outcome that keeps Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim as Prime Minister,” he told reporters.
Nik Nazmi, who is also the Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability, made the comments during a vehicle enforcement operation in Chukai today.
Asked about his own prospects in defending his position as vice-president, he responded confidently: “If I wasn’t confident, I wouldn’t contest. If the delegates choose me, I will remain.”
Twelve leaders have submitted nominations for the party’s vice-presidency, including four incumbents—Negeri Sembilan Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun, Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Chang Lih Kang, Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari, and Nik Nazmi himself.
The PKR National Congress, including the Youth (AMK) and Women’s wings, will take place from 22 to 24 May in Johor Bahru, with the election set for 23 May. - May 12, 2025
