GEORGE TOWN – Police will not record DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng’s statement on Christmas eve tomorrow after all.
Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Abdul Hamid Bador told the former finance minister that the recording of his statement has been postponed to another date next year.
In a statement today, Lim said Abdul Hamid had sent him a text message to apologise for the oversight of his officers in choosing Christmas eve to take his statement.
Lim who is also the Bagan MP thanked the IGP for wishing him and his family a merry Christmas.
“I have been informed by my lawyer and MP for Puchong Gobind Singh Deo that the police have cancelled the recording of my police statement scheduled for tomorrow,” he said.
“Gobind said it is fixed for another date next year.”
The police had earlier fixed the session for 10am tomorrow at the George Town district police headquarters to question him over two press releases he had issued in 2019.
Earlier today, opposition leader and PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had criticised the original timing of the recording on Christmas eve, saying it reeked of malice and political vindictiveness.
Noting that it was for purported offences committed more than a year ago, he noted that the police had arrested Lim and pulled his wife Betty Chew in for questioning even back then.
“The Royal Malaysian Police, as a critical part of our society and the protector of all, must not be seen to be acting at the direction of politicians,” Anwar had said.
“They must not just be fair and transparent, but they have to also be seen as fair and apolitical in carrying out their duties,” he added. – The Vibes, December 23, 2020
