POLICE said an accident involving 21 school students on the North-South Expressway near the Bandar Dato Onn exit in Johor Bahru yesterday occurred when the van they were travelling in hit the back of a trailer that stopped in the emergency lane due to engine problems.
Johor Bahru North District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Balveer Singh Mahindar Singh said police received information about the incident at 6.23pm and also detected a viral video of the accident on social media.
“Investigations found that the accident occurred at about 2pm, involving a school van driven by a 46-year-old local man from the Bandar Dato Onn exit heading north to Johor Bahru, before it crashed into the back of a trailer that had stopped in the emergency lane due to engine problems.
“As a result of the collision, the van driver and two of the 21 students in the vehicle sustained injuries and were treated at the Sultan Ismail Hospital.
“The 32-year-old trailer driver was not injured,” he said in a statement last night.
He said the accident was being investigated under Regulation 10 of the Road Traffic Regulations 1959 for failing to control the vehicle causing an accident.
It was earlier reported that the driver of the school van was injured after he was trapped in the driver's seat after the vehicle crashed into the back of the trailer.
The victim was successfully extricated by firemen within half an hour, before being sent to the hospital. – July 8, 2025
