Penang rebuts 'unfounded' criticism of tourism sector as recovery gains pace
Claims that the state lacks new major tourism products or infrastructure fail to reflect the substantial gains made over the past two years - July 11, 2025

PENANG'S tourism office has rebuffed recent criticisms of the state's leisure sector, calling them unverified and politically motivated, particularly as the industry is demonstrating strong signs of post-pandemic recovery.

Kyle Choong, the special officer to the state executive councillor for tourism Wong Hon Wai, told the Vibes.com, recent claims that the state lacks new major tourism products or infrastructure fail to reflect the substantial gains made over the past two years.

"Instead of acknowledging the evidence-backed progress, some quarters have chosen to focus on peripheral issues, such as the lighting of signboards at Penang International Airport (PIA)—an operational matter that does not fall under the jurisdiction of the state government," Choong said.

He warned that such distractions misrepresent the reality on the ground and undermine collaborative efforts to sustain the resurgence of Penang’s tourism economy.

Choong highlighted that PIA recorded nearly 1.99 million passenger arrivals in the first quarter of 2025—an increase of 69.5 per cent compared to the same period in 2024. International traffic rose by over 80 per cent, signalling improving air connectivity actively pursued by Wong’s office.

"These numbers are not incidental. They are the outcome of coordinated efforts to position Penang as a high-value destination, with targeted international engagement, airline partnerships, and consistent destination marketing," he noted.

In 2024, PIA handled 7.66 million passengers, ranking it as the second busiest airport in Malaysia after Kuala Lumpur International Airport. The momentum has carried into 2025, with passenger movements in January and February up 17.4 per cent year-on-year.

Responding to criticism over a perceived lack of new attractions, Choong emphasised that the state's approach has been to reimagine and enhance core tourism products to maximise local economic impact.

He pointed to the relocation of the Penang Bridge International Marathon (PBIM) to the second Penang bridge for better logistics, and the revamp of the Penang International Dragon Boat Regatta to boost regional appeal.

Cultural staples such as the George Town Festival, George Town Literary Festival, and Penang International Food Festival continue to attract international attention, reinforcing the state's identity as a centre for arts, heritage, and culture-based tourism.

"The focus is on maintenance and economic growth, not necessarily just on expanding the range of tourism products," said Choong.

He added that Penang’s existing assets—including its UNESCO heritage zones, coastal landscapes, culinary offerings, and cultural calendar—remain highly competitive on the global tourism stage.

"Wong remains focused on delivering a tourism strategy grounded in data, sustainability, and long-term benefit for Penangites. While no administration is without areas for improvement, the success of Penang’s tourism recovery is evident in its visitor statistics, economic impact, and international reputation."

Choong said it was regrettable that certain political quarters, including the Penang MCA, have chosen to amplify minor operational concerns, rather than recognise the broader trajectory of recovery and growth.

"The people of Penang deserve a constructive discourse rooted in facts, not distractions driven by narrow political interests," he said. - July 11, 2025
