A LOCAL man has been arrested after his Audi A6 crashed into two police motorcycles belonging to the Royal Malaysia Police’s Motorcycle Patrol Unit (URB) on Jalan Johor Bahru–Air Hitam in the early hours of Saturday.
Johor Bahru North District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Balveer Singh Mahindar Singh, confirmed the incident occurred at around 4am near Kilometre 8 of the road, when the Audi, travelling from Skudai, allegedly lost control and veered into two stationary Kawasaki EX250 motorcycles parked at the scene.
"Two police officers, aged 29 and 36, were carrying out traffic control duties at the site of an earlier accident when the collision occurred," said ACP Balveer in a statement today.
"One officer sustained injuries to his left leg and is currently receiving treatment at Hospital Sultanah Aminah, Johor Bahru. The second officer, along with the driver of the vehicle, did not suffer any injuries."
A breathalyser test conducted on the driver revealed a positive result for alcohol. However, preliminary urine testing indicated no presence of drugs.
"The suspect has been remanded for two days until 8 September, following approval from the Johor Bahru Magistrates’ Court," Balveer said.
The case is being investigated under Section 44(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for driving under the influence of intoxicating liquor or drugs. Upon conviction, offenders may face imprisonment of between 10 and 15 years, a fine ranging from RM50,000 to RM100,000, and disqualification from holding a driving licence for 10 years.
