SURIA KLCC has clarified that its security personnel were enforcing standard safety protocols when they stopped a visitor from entering the shopping centre while carrying a long pole, which was being used to hold a Palestinian flag.
In a statement issued via its official Facebook page, the mall’s management explained that the action was not politically motivated, but part of its routine policy to ensure a safe and comfortable environment for all patrons.
“This action is consistent with our security procedures, which prohibit items that may pose a safety risk or cause discomfort to other visitors,” the statement read.
“We wish to emphasise that this is a standard safety measure applied to all visitors, and we assure the public that this action was not driven by any political stance,” it added.
The clarification came after a video circulating on social media showed a brief exchange between mall security personnel and a group of individuals attempting to enter the premises, one of whom was former Batu MP and social activist Tian Chua.
The group, carrying Palestinian flags and chanting “Free Palestine”, were seen being asked to leave the premises by security staff. According to posts shared on Instagram, the individuals had earlier taken part in a pro-Palestine solidarity rally in central Kuala Lumpur before heading to Suria KLCC.
While the video drew criticism from some quarters, the management reiterated that its primary concern is public welfare.
“The safety and well-being of our community is always our utmost priority. We appreciate the public’s cooperation and understanding in helping us maintain a safe and orderly environment for everyone,” the statement added. - Sept 8, 2025
