KUALA LUMPUR – Following reports of a meat cartel operating in Johor, opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has urged the government and relevant ministries to carry out an investigation into the matter.
In a statement today, he called for a detailed, efficient and transparent investigation.
Previously, it was reported that senior officials from four government agencies were bribed with money and sex to abet the cartel, which has been operating for more than 40 years.
“This is clearly an immoral activity. Hence, we have to step up efforts to fight corruption. These government employees are easily bought, neglecting their responsibilities to the country and the people.
“This scandal has tarnished the reputation and image of an institution entrusted with upholding Islam.
“Despite getting a large allocation almost every year, this scandal has eroded the public’s trust in the institution.”
However, Anwar did not name the institution he was referring to in his statement.
It was reported earlier this month that a syndicate smuggling in frozen meat from China, Ukraine, Brazil and Argentina has been repackaging the products with the halal logo at a warehouse in Senai, Johor.
It was found that kangaroo and horse meat have also been mixed with the tainted beef.
On December 23, the Malaysian Islamic Development Department had issued an appeal for all parties to refrain from speculating about the meat cartel case.
Its deputy director-general (operations) Datuk Abdul Aziz Jusoh said speculations could compromise the credibility of the investigations. – The Vibes, December 26, 2020
