KUALA LUMPUR – Accidents at the workplace, such as the gas-inhalation incident here on Friday, could be avoided if all safety measures are followed, said Ikatan Komuniti Selamat chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye.
“The employer or appointed contractor must take the responsibility to ensure that their workers have qualification certificates and attended occupational safety and health courses,” he told Bernama yesterday.
“This can increase employees’ awareness and skills when carrying out risky work, thus preventing any incident that could threaten their lives.”
He said those who work in enclosed spaces, such as sewage treatment plants, should be provided with special equipment to detect the presence of toxic gases.
He expressed home that the Occupational Safety and Health Department will play a proactive role in monitoring work carried out in risky locations, to ensure it complies with the standard operating procedures set.
In the 3.10pm incident on Friday, three men died after inhaling gas while cleaning a sewage plant in Jalan Pantai Permai 1, Pantai Dalam.
The victims – two locals and a Bangladeshi – were employed by a cleaning contractor. – Bernama, December 27, 2020
