TWO men who were arrested for obstructing police during a solidarity rally in support of the Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF) outside the United States Embassy in Kuala Lumpur have been released on police bail, authorities confirmed.
Wangsa Maju District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Mohammad Lazim Ismail, said the men, aged 23 and 32, were released after their statements were recorded.
The incident, which occurred during a peaceful assembly earlier on Thursday, was brought to wider attention after a 54-second video of the arrests went viral on Facebook.
According to Kuala Lumpur Police Chief, Datuk Fadil Marsus, an investigation paper has been opened under Section 186 of the Penal Code for obstructing public servants in the discharge of their duties.
The rally, which began around noon, reportedly drew approximately 50 participants. While initially peaceful, tensions escalated when some individuals began blocking traffic along Jalan Tun Razak in front of the US Embassy.
“The situation became tense when some participants began obstructing traffic. A scuffle broke out, during which a police officer sustained a mouth injury after being elbowed by one of the protesters while carrying out security duties,” said Fadil in a statement.
He added that investigations are ongoing and urged organisers and demonstrators to adhere to existing laws and regulations governing public assemblies, in accordance with the constitutional right to peaceful assembly.
“This provision must be exercised responsibly and with wisdom,” he said.
“The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) respects the freedom of Malaysians to assemble peacefully and stands ready to provide necessary support and security assistance. However, we will not hesitate to take firm action against any individual or group that violates the law,” he said. - October 3, 2025
