Drug abuse, affordable housing for youth among focus of Dewan Rakyat today

THE issue of drug abuse, which has contributed to a rise in related criminal activities, including robbery, is among the matters scheduled for discussion at the Dewan Rakyat sitting, today.

According to the Order Paper published on the Parliament’s website, Datuk Jonathan Yasin (GRS-Ranau) is expected to ask the Home Minister, during the oral question-and-answer session, about measures taken by the ministry to curb drug abuse and trafficking in the country.

Khairil Nizam Khirudin (PN-Jerantut) will seek clarification from the Transport Minister on the frequent aerotrain breakdowns at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) and the government’s immediate steps to ensure safe and efficient passenger movement.

During the same session, Wong Chen (PH-Subang) is scheduled to ask the Women, Family and Community Development Minister about the ministry’s plans to increase the number of shelters in rural areas, and to upgrade existing ones, to meet safety standards and provide adequate psychosocial support, reports Bernama.

Meanwhile, Mohd Nazri Abu Hassan (PN-Merbok) will raise a question to the Housing and Local Government Minister about the ministry’s initiatives to help young people own their first affordable homes in urban areas, through accessible financing facilities, and efforts to enhance private sector participation amid rising living costs.

The sitting then will continue with the first day of debate on the Supply Bill 2026 (Budget 2026), which was tabled by Prime Minister and Finance Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, last Friday.

According to the Dewan Rakyat calendar, the policy-level debate will take place over eight days, until Oct 28, followed by the committee-level debate, scheduled for 14 days, from Nov 5 to 27.

Budget 2026 allocates a total of RM419.2 billion, comprising RM338.2 billion for federal operating expenditure and RM81 billion for federal development expenditure.

Themed Belanjawan MADANI Keempat: Belanjawan Rakyat (Fourth MADANI Budget: A Budget for the People), Budget 2026 marks the fourth edition in the MADANI Budget series, and the first under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) 2026-2030.
