PAS Vice-President Datuk Mohd Amar Nik Abdullah has called for calm and urged the public to allow police to investigate an alleged audio recording said to resemble the voice of Perlis Menteri Besar, Mohd Shukri Ramli (pic), which reportedly implicates the Perlis royal household in administrative appointments.
Speaking on Saturday evening at a public address marking PAS Kelantan’s 70th anniversary, Mohd Amar said he had yet to listen to the recording, which recently went viral on TikTok.
“I’ve only heard people talking about it, but I haven’t actually listened to the clip in full. I can’t confirm whether it’s real or fake,” he told reporters. “In this era of AI, not everything can be taken at face value.”
The audio, which has triggered political backlash and a police probe, is alleged to reveal private discussions between the Menteri Besar and the Raja of Perlis concerning the appointment of civil service heads in the state.
UMNO Youth Perlis claims the clip constitutes slander and an insult to the royal institution.
Police confirmed receiving a report filed on Friday by the Arau division of UMNO Youth. According to district police chief Superintendent Ahmad Mohsin Md Rodi, the complainant’s statement has been recorded under Section 112 of the Criminal Procedure Code.
UMNO Youth state secretary Ahmad Nazrin Abdul Aziz said the disclosure of such private discussions was inappropriate and risked creating the perception that the royal institution was involved in the state’s political affairs.
“This is not about political gain,” he said, “but a moral duty to uphold the dignity and sovereignty of the monarchy, which must remain above political influence.”
He also called on state leaders and civil servants to be cautious in making public remarks that could be construed as touching on royal matters.
The leaked recording is now the subject of an ongoing investigation. Police have yet to confirm its authenticity or whether any laws, including the Sedition Act 1948 or Official Secrets Act 1972, have been breached. - October 19, 2025
