UNIVERSITI Malaya (UM) has launched a comprehensive investigation after it was alleged that an article in its academic journal, Jurnal Al-Tamaddun, cited a satirical website as factual information.
Mastura Mohamad Yusoff, Head of Media and Creative at UM’s Corporate Communications Centre, said the review aims to examine the entire editorial and publication process involved.
“The review is to ensure that the university’s academic integrity continues to be preserved. UM has initiated a comprehensive review to examine this matter, including the editorial processes involved. This step aligns with the commitment to uphold the highest standards of research and publication ethics,” she said in a statement on Tuesday.
UM emphasised its commitment to fostering a responsible research culture and maintaining trust within its academic community.
The controversy first emerged after a Reddit user pointed out that in a 2018 paper published in Jurnal Al-Tamaddun, Professor Solehah Yaacob, an Arabic language lecturer at Universiti Islam Antarabangsa Malaysia (UIAM), cited a satirical article from The Onion as factual, which allegedly contained claims about ancient Greek historians fabricating historical accounts.
Jurnal Al-Tamaddun is a biannual, indexed journal that focuses on history, civilisation, and Islamic thought.
Mastura added that the outcome of the investigation will determine the appropriate actions, including possible corrections or retraction of the article if ethical violations are confirmed.
“The university intends to ensure that every publication under its name meets the highest academic standards to safeguard the institution’s credibility and the public’s trust in the research produced,” she said. - November 12, 2025
