THAILAND and Cambodia have begun withdrawing military personnel from their shared border in line with the Kuala Lumpur Peace Accord signed on the margins of the 47th ASEAN Summit last month.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the development was conveyed to him during a telephone conversation with United States President Donald Trump on Friday.
“I have just held discussions with United States President Donald Trump to review the latest developments along the Cambodia–Thailand border. I expressed my appreciation for Cambodia and Thailand’s readiness to continue choosing dialogue and diplomatic efforts as a potent avenue for resolution,” he said in a Facebook post.
Anwar added that he welcomed President Trump’s active role in reaching out to the prime ministers of both Cambodia and Thailand to ensure any disagreements are managed with decorum in the interest of regional stability and harmony.
On 26 October, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul signed the Kuala Lumpur Peace Accord, witnessed by Anwar and President Trump, committing both sides to peaceful management of their long-running border issue.
Malaysia has reiterated its commitment to act as a fair and responsible facilitator in assisting Cambodia and Thailand to resolve their protracted border concerns.
Anwar said Malaysia remains firm in its determination to strengthen regional peace, contributing to overall stability in Southeast Asia.
In another Facebook update, the Prime Minister reported having spoken earlier today with Hun Manet to obtain the latest updates on the matter. “In that discussion, I sincerely appreciated Cambodia’s mature approach in continuing to choose the path of peace and prioritising resolution through healthy negotiation and dialogue,” he said.
He added that Malaysia fully supports Cambodia’s position to utilise previously agreed channels and to uphold the Kuala Lumpur Peace Accord dated 26 October 2025 as the foundation for concluding the longstanding dispute.
“This principle is vital to ensure any differences are addressed calmly, methodically and in line with regional understanding,” he said. - November 15, 2025
