READINESS to exit the Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition was among three motions submitted by MIC delegates at the 79th Annual General Meeting 2025 at the Ideal Convention Centre (IDCC) in Shah Alam, today.
Based on a resolution distributed to grassroots members at division, branch and MIC leadership levels, the delegates unanimously agreed to do so after taking into account the current political situation in the country.
"The meeting also took into account a comprehensive assessment of MIC's position and interests in the BN coalition.
"The existing cooperation no longer provides sufficient space for MIC to play an effective role in championing the interests of the Indian community and contributing to national development in this country," the delegation's resolution said.
Therefore, it said, MIC is ready to leave BN, subject to the process and provisions enshrined in the MIC Constitution.
“MIC is ready to officially apply to join the Perikatan Nasional (PN) coalition with the aim of building a new platform that is more inclusive, principled and gives wider space to the voices of the Indian community in Malaysia.
“Today’s meeting gives full mandate to MIC President, Tan Sri S A Vigneswaran and the Central Working Committee (CWC) to implement steps and official matters related to this matter,” it added.
The second motion in the resolution also touched on strong and unwavering support for the party leadership, namely Vigneswaran and his Deputy President, Datuk Seri M Saravanan.
The third motion discussed the position and future of MIC in the political landscape in this country.
It gives the President full mandate to make the best strategic decisions for the party's political future, including considering any reorganization of political cooperation or new alliances in line with MIC's basic principles and struggles.
A senior MIC leader later said that the party’s readiness to align with a new coalition depends on what the alliance has to offer them (MIC).
“The final decision rests with the party president, and it remains uncertain whether MIC will join PN or pursue another path.
“An official announcement is expected only after the Sabah state elections, as no decision will be made today,” he said.
A resolution was also passed stating that the final decision will be made only after deliberations between the Central Working Committee and the party president later. – November 16, 2025
