RESIDENTS of Wang Kelian, a small town in Perlis, have been cut off from surrounding areas after heavy rainfall triggered landslides along the steep route from View Point Wang Kelian to Kampung Wang Kelian, police reported.

The landslides, caused by unusually intense rain in the district since yesterday, were further compounded by fallen trees along Jalan Wang Kelian, blocking the route temporarily.

Padang Besar District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Mohd Shokri Abdullah, confirmed that two temporary evacuation centres had been opened at Sekolah Kebangsaan Lubuk Sireh and Sekolah Kebangsaan Titi Tinggi, accommodating 120 residents from 20 families affected in Kampung Wang Kelian.

“As of 3pm today, Sungai Pelarit, Sungai Chuchoh, Timah Tasoh, and Sungai Jarum were reported to be at dangerous levels,” he said in a statement.

Mohd Shokri also noted that several paddy fields had been affected by the floods, while tourist and recreational sites, including Gua Kelam, had been closed for safety reasons.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, with contingency plans in place to assist residents and prevent further disruption. - November 23, 2025
