FORMER Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng has joined calls for the government to ensure an independent and transparent investigation into the fatal shooting of three men in Malacca last week by the police.
The DAP adviser and Bagan MP said a terms of reference of such an investigation would be needed whether the policemen involved had executed the three men in cold blood.
The investigation must also examine whether the deceased were involved in criminal activities and the type of action taken against the policemen if found guilty of murder, criminal wrongdoing or misconduct, he said.
“There is no doubt the alleged shocking audio recording of the final moments by the wife of one of the deceased before, during and after the three men were shot dead have greatly disturbed if not distressed the public.
"If I had received so many messages, I am sure the Prime Minister would have received more,” he said.
Lim said the Prime Minister should publicly address this grave public concern and ensure justice for the families of the deceased.
“More importantly, the Prime Minister needs to reassure the public by demonstrating in an open manner that he adheres to the rule of law and that those in authority do not abuse their powers,” said Lim.
Melaka police investigated the Nov 24 incident for attempted murder under Section 307 of the Penal Code, after police chief Datuk Dzulkhairi Mukhtar claimed the trio were serial robbers who had attacked police with a parang.
Lawyers representing the families of the three men – M Puspanathan, 21, T Poovaneswaran, 24, and G Logeswaran, 29 – said audio and forensic evidence suggested that the men were killed “execution-style”.
Bukit Aman has since taken over the investigation - December 5, 2025.
