TWO five-year-old girls who went missing on Saturday morning in Kampung Pasir Pandak, near Santubong, were found safe yesterday morning after an extensive community and police search.
The children, Humaira Qalesya Mohd Dir and Nur Ashafieya Aisyah Abd Nasri Asrafie, who reside at the same address, were located approximately three kilometres from their grandmother’s home.
Authorities reported that the girls were cold but unharmed, having been discovered perched on a rock near a waterway.
Deputy Chief of Police for Kuching District, DSP Zamry Ali, warned parents about the hidden dangers of shallow waterways.
“Do not let children play in drains. Even if the water is shallow, the currents are strong and hazardous. Do not wait for a tragedy to occur,” he said.
The search, which marked its second day, was called off less than two hours after the girls were found.
The operation had involved over 70 villagers initially, who began the search before requesting assistance from the police and fire department.
The two children were immediately transported to Sarawak General Hospital for further medical attention.
Authorities have commended the swift community response and emphasised the importance of supervising young children near bodies of water to prevent similar incidents in the future. - December 7, 2025
