MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong has firmly ruled out the possibility of the party joining Perikatan Nasional (PN), saying the Chinese community has long struggled to accept the ideology of PAS, a key component of the opposition coalition.
Speaking at the MCA General Assembly today, Wee said repeated controversial remarks by certain PAS leaders — often reflecting religious conservatism and offending followers of other faiths — made it impossible for non-Islamic parties to align with PN.
“Some have suggested that we join the opposition coalition, PN, but we are very clear that the Chinese community has for a long time held no positive view of PAS and, in fact, rejects the party,” he said.
He added that circumstances might be different if PAS were to undertake genuine reforms and adopt a more moderate approach that could be accepted by Malaysia’s multiracial society.
Rumours had previously circulated that MCA and fellow Barisan Nasional (BN) component party MIC were unhappy and considering leaving the coalition.
To date, only MIC delegates have unanimously approved two resolutions to exit BN, although the matter awaits a final decision from the party’s Central Working Committee.
Wee noted that non-Muslim distrust of PAS had deepened ever since the party cut ties entirely with DAP nearly a decade ago, a move that, he said, continues to shape public perception.
Separately, Wee issued a pointed reminder that MCA would not hesitate to reassess its strategic position within BN if UMNO persists in pursuing political cooperation beyond the coalition — particularly with DAP.
“MCA’s position is very clear: no DAP. In any major decisions on future political cooperation, if UMNO continues to lean towards arrangements outside BN, especially with DAP, to the extent that the spirit of BN loses its meaning, MCA will not remain silent,” he said.
“We will reassess our strategic position and make whatever decision is necessary to protect the party’s interests.
“Whenever issues arise that involve MCA’s ideological principles, political direction or survival in national politics, the Central Committee will not hesitate to make the appropriate decision at the right time,” he added. - December 7, 2025
