JOHOR Bahru experienced two separate child rescue operations on Friday after intense afternoon rainfall triggered sudden flooding in several residential areas.
In Kampung Mohd Amin, near Tepian Tebrau, 18 infants were among 34 people trapped inside a kindergarten when floodwaters rose rapidly following more than an hour of heavy rain. Emergency teams were deployed immediately.
A spokesperson for Johor’s Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) said officers from the Larkin Fire and Rescue Station rushed to the scene after receiving a distress call at 4.26pm.
“Firefighters successfully evacuated five teachers, a cook, 18 infants and 10 kindergarten children to safe ground.
“Operations continued with patrol and rescue efforts in the surrounding area,” the spokesperson said.
Volunteers from Ihsan Johor and personnel from Johor Bahru South District Police Headquarters assisted in the evacuation. Residents said the locality is known as one of the city’s flood-prone hotspots.
At least 15 homes were affected, involving around 60 victims, although no temporary evacuation centres were opened as the floodwaters receded swiftly by around 7pm.
In a separate incident, a baby girl was rescued from a childcare home inundated by flash floods in Jalan Limau Purut, Pengkalan Rinting, Kampung Pasir.
Senior Fire Officer I Wan Nor Afandi Wan Yussoff of the Kempas Fire and Rescue Station said his team arrived shortly after receiving an emergency call at 4.38pm.
“Upon arrival, the team found flash flooding and a baby trapped inside the house.
“Firefighters removed the baby and handed her safely to her mother,” he said.
No injuries were reported in either incident. - December 13, 2025
