TWO fatal road incidents involving children and a university student have come under police investigation, highlighting the dangers faced by young road users and pedestrians, as authorities appeal for public cooperation to assist ongoing inquiries.
In Negeri Sembilan, a teenage girl and a child were killed, while another teenager was seriously injured, after the motorcycle they were riding skidded off the road and crashed into a tree along Jalan Taman Musytari on Sunday evening.
Jempol district police chief Superintendent Norhisham Mustapar said the victims who died were a 13-year-old girl, who was riding the motorcycle, and a 10-year-old child who was seated as the middle pillion rider.
He said the accident occurred at about 5.55pm as the motorcycle was travelling from Taman Mawar towards Taman Musytari.
“Upon reaching the location of the incident, the rider failed to control the motorcycle before it skidded onto the right road shoulder and crashed into a tree.
“Two people died while another pillion rider, aged 13, suffered a broken leg and head injuries,” he said in a statement.
Norhisham added that the case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, and urged witnesses to come forward to assist with investigations.
In a separate incident in Kelantan, a female student from Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Machang branch was killed after being struck by a motorcycle while crossing within the university campus on Saturday.
Machang district police chief Superintendent Ahmad Shafiki Hussin said the 19-year-old victim, a third-semester student from the Faculty of Management and Business, was believed to have been wearing earbuds at the time of the incident.
“The victim, aged 19, was a third-semester student from the Faculty of Management and Business and is alleged to have been distracted while crossing because there were earbuds in her ears.
“The police do not rule out this allegation and there are witnesses who saw the victim crossing recklessly, and investigations are still ongoing,” he said when contacted on Sunday.
He said the accident occurred at about 6.20pm, and the victim, who was from Terengganu, was pronounced dead at the scene after suffering severe head injuries.
Police received a report on the incident at about 6.40pm following information from members of the public.
According to Ahmad Shafiki, initial investigations found that the accident occurred when a motorcycle ridden by a 20-year-old male student was travelling from the main gate of UiTM Machang towards the hostel.
“Upon reaching the location, while the motorcycle was climbing a hill, a pedestrian is believed to have suddenly crossed the road unexpectedly.
“The motorcyclist attempted to swerve to the left, but a collision with the pedestrian occurred,” he said.
As a result of the collision, the victim fell onto the road divider and sustained head injuries before being confirmed dead at the scene.
The body was sent to the Forensic Department of Machang Hospital for a post-mortem to determine the exact cause of death.
“The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
