PRIME MINISTER Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has underscored the importance of the forthcoming ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ meeting as a platform for addressing and easing the ongoing tensions between Thailand and Cambodia.
Speaking in a Facebook post on Sunday, Anwar highlighted that the meeting would allow both countries to engage in open discussions, resolve differences peacefully, and achieve a fair and enduring resolution. “I had the opportunity to communicate with the Prime Ministers of Cambodia and Thailand to exchange views and discuss the best path towards de-escalating the tensions between the two nations,” he said.
The Prime Minister stressed that the success of the dialogue would depend on the commitment of both parties to uphold the principles of consultation, prudence, and mutual respect, thereby safeguarding regional peace and stability. “I emphasise the importance of Cambodia and Thailand adhering to the spirit of dialogue, wisdom, and mutual respect in order to end the tensions and preserve peace and stability in the region,” he said.
During a briefing with chief editors at Kompleks Seri Perdana last Wednesday, Anwar confirmed that both Thailand and Cambodia had agreed to participate in the special meeting, signalling willingness from both sides to engage in constructive diplomatic discussions.
The meeting is viewed as a critical test of ASEAN’s capacity to mediate conflicts among member states, providing a structured environment for negotiation while promoting dialogue over confrontation in the region. - December 21, 2025
