UMNO deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan has publicly taken aim at the Democratic Action Party (DAP), saying he is also looking forward to “celebrating” an upcoming court decision, this time involving the controversial Penang undersea tunnel project.
In a Facebook post on Sunday, Mohamad, who is also Malaysia’s Foreign Minister, said he was eagerly awaiting a court ruling on the project, which he sarcastically suggested would be “officially opened” by the High Court next year.
“I too am waiting to celebrate when the High Court officiates the Penang tunnel, maybe in mid-2026,” he wrote.
Mohamad’s remark is widely seen as a swipe at DAP publicity secretary Yeo Bee Yin, following her social media post celebrating a court decision that Datuk Seri Najib Razak would continue serving his sentence at Kajang Prison.
The Penang tunnel referenced by Mohamad relates to the RM6.7 billion undersea tunnel and major roads project, which has been linked to corruption charges involving DAP adviser Lim Guan Eng.
On Saturday, Yeo, who is also the Member of Parliament for Puchong, shared a post reading, “Another reason to celebrate this year end,” alongside a link to a news report titled “No house arrest for Najib.”
Her post drew swift backlash from several UMNO leaders, many of whom expressed offence and issued responses questioning the future of UMNO’s cooperation with DAP, both of which are partners in the current unity government.
Yeo’s post appeared just hours after High Court judge Alice Loke Yee Ching delivered her decision, stating she was satisfied that the issue of house arrest had never been raised, discussed or decided upon during the Pardons Board meeting held on January 29 last year.
Mohamad’s pointed response underscores growing unease within the ruling coalition, as political leaders exchange barbs over court rulings that continue to reverberate through Malaysia’s already fragile political landscape. - December 23, 2025
