PAS has signalled its intention to field one of its leaders to helm Perikatan Nasional (PN) following Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin’s announcement that he will step down as chairman of the opposition coalition.
However, the party stressed that the position does not automatically fall to PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang.
PAS information chief Ahmad Fadhli Shaari said the party would instead nominate an individual deemed capable of uniting and mobilising the collective strength of all parties within the coalition.
“Tan Sri Muhyiddin has stated his intention to resign as PN chairman with effect from Jan 1, 2026,” he said.
“I am confident that PAS will present a candidate from the party to lead PN as the new chairman.
“It does not necessarily have to be the party president, but an individual who is trusted to galvanise the strength of the parties within PN,” Ahmad Fadhli said.
Earlier, Muhyiddin, who is also Bersatu president, was reported to have announced his resignation as PN chairman.
The move was confirmed by several Bersatu leaders, including party secretary-general Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali and information chief Datuk Tun Faisal Ismail Aziz.
At the same time, Ahmad Fadhli, who is also the Pasir Mas MP, said a reorganisation of PN’s structure would be carried out to place greater emphasis on operational work going forward.
He described the former prime minister’s decision to step aside as PN chairman as wise and timely, saying the coalition needs renewed momentum as it prepares for the 16th general election.
