TRAVELLERS entering or leaving Malaysia are not required to use the National Integrated Immigration System (MyNIISe) mobile application at this stage, with immigration authorities confirming that conventional passport-based clearance methods remain fully available at the country’s entry points.
Immigration Department director-general Datuk Zakaria Shaaban said members of the public should not be concerned if they have yet to download or use the new app, as multiple options for immigration clearance continue to operate alongside it.
“At present, the use of MyNIISe is not mandatory. Travellers still have other options, including passing through autogates using their passports, not only via QR codes.
“Passport scanning can still be used even without the app. Therefore, the public need not worry,” he said after addressing Immigration Department staff yesterday.
Zakaria said travellers may continue to use existing channels such as QR codes via the MyBorderPass application, manual processing counters or conventional automated gates, adding that the introduction of MyNIISe is intended to enhance efficiency rather than disrupt current procedures.
Nevertheless, he encouraged travellers to adopt the MyNIISe app, noting that it offers faster and more efficient immigration clearance.
“For those who wish to use the QR code facility, they will need to download the MyNIISe app and register using a MyDigital ID. That is all. Overall, the process of immigration clearance will not be disrupted,” he said.
He added that MyBorderPass would continue to operate until it is fully integrated into MyNIISe, although the transition timeline has yet to be finalised. The replacement of older automated gates, he said, would also be carried out in phases.
On Jan 6, the Home Ministry announced that MyDigital ID would be implemented as a single login platform for Malaysians using the MyNIISe mobile app beginning today.
The ministry said the move is part of the broader MyNIISe rollout and aims to provide accurate and secure identity verification through the National Registration Department’s database, without storing users’ personal data.
The MyNIISe app was first introduced on Sept 22 last year at the Sultan Iskandar Building and the Sultan Abu Bakar Complex in Johor Baru.
It is scheduled to be expanded in stages to Kuala Lumpur International Airport Terminals 1 and 2, as well as the Bayan Lepas, Kuching and Kota Kinabalu entry points.
As of Dec 30, MyNIISe had recorded 599,967 downloads, with 287,258 users successfully registered on the platform. - January 15, 2026
