MALAYSIA and Singapore have reaffirmed their shared commitment to deepening economic ties, with both countries agreeing to press ahead with the implementation of the Johor–Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ) as a central pillar of bilateral cooperation.
The renewed momentum followed a courtesy call by Singapore’s Minister for National Development, H.E. Chee Hong Tat, on Malaysia’s Minister of Economy Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir, underscoring the importance both governments attach to the Johor–Singapore economic partnership.
Both sides emphasised that cooperation between Johor and Singapore is anchored in a long-term vision based on trust, policy continuity and mutual benefit.
They highlighted continued collaboration in strategic areas such as high-value investments, digitalisation, sustainable development and talent development, which are seen as critical to ensuring the success of the JS-SEZ.
The two countries reaffirmed the special economic zone as a key driver of bilateral economic relations, noting that the project has now moved beyond planning and into the execution stage.
The JS-SEZ is expected to leverage Johor’s land, labour and industrial capacity alongside Singapore’s capital, technological strengths and global connectivity, with the aim of attracting high-quality investments, strengthening regional supply chains and creating skilled employment opportunities on both sides of the Causeway.
Malaysia is in the final stages of preparing the JS-SEZ Investment Blueprint and Masterplan, which will articulate the long-term strategic direction of the zone.
The documents will outline priority sectors, designated development zones and a comprehensive implementation roadmap covering governance arrangements, incentive frameworks, infrastructure development and talent planning. Malaysia is targeting an official launch of the JS-SEZ in March 2026.
Discussions also focused on enhancing the role of the Johor–Singapore Cooperation Ministerial Committee (JSCMC), with proposals to provide clearer oversight and a sharper economic focus, particularly in driving the JS-SEZ agenda.
The final governance structure for the committee is expected to be presented at the next JSCMC meeting in Singapore.
The Minister of Economy expressed confidence that disciplined execution and sustained cooperation between the two countries would allow the JS-SEZ and the strengthened JSCMC framework to deliver concrete and lasting benefits for businesses, workers and local communities in both Malaysia and Singapore. - January 30, 2026
