THE disappearance of a University of Malaya student since Tuesday has raised growing concerns after her mobile phone and iPad were reportedly last active on the same evening, intensifying questions about her safety.
According to a widely circulated social media notice, the missing student has been identified as Nawal Shahirah Mohd Jamil, 23, a third-year undergraduate studying economics. She has been unreachable since leaving her residence at Ryan & Miho, Petaling Jaya, on the night of 27 January.
In response to the case, the University of Malaya confirmed in a statement today that it is working closely with police to locate the student.
The university emphasised that it takes the matter seriously and has acted swiftly to liaise with authorities and Nawal’s family to provide appropriate support and assistance.
“Members of the public are advised not to speculate or spread unverified information in order to respect the investigation process and protect the privacy of all parties involved,” the statement said.
The university added that any official updates regarding the case will be shared as they become available, expressing hope that the student will be found safely.
Meanwhile, police have confirmed that the investigation encompasses all possible angles, including a review of closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage at the student’s residence.
Petaling Jaya District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Shamsudin Mamat, stated that Nawal has not yet been located. “A thorough investigation is being conducted, examining every lead to trace the whereabouts of the missing person. This includes reviewing CCTV at her residence, so the investigation is covering all angles,” he said in a statement on Sunday.
According to earlier reports, Nawal was last seen at a condominium near Jalan Profesor Diraja Ungku Aziz, Section 14, Petaling Jaya, on Tuesday night. The case remains under active police investigation. - February 1, 2026
