A SINGLE mother was found dead with slash wounds to her neck at a flat in Sungai Dua here on Tuesday, prompting police to open a murder investigation.

The 41-year-old woman was discovered lying on a bed in one of the bedrooms of a first-floor unit at Flat Sri Murni.

Police received a report at about 1.40pm after neighbours became concerned when the victim failed to respond despite the front door being open, while the metal grille gate was found locked.

The victim was believed to have been living at the flat with her 15-year-old son.

Police are investigating the case under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder, including efforts to determine the motive behind the killing.

Penang Police Chief Datuk Azizee Ismail, when contacted, confirmed the incident.

The body was sent to Hospital Kepala Batas for a post-mortem examination.

Meanwhile, Penang Hospital Consultant Pathologist Datuk Dr Zahari Noor confirmed that slash wounds were found on the victim’s neck.

He said preliminary investigations suggested the injuries were inflicted using a sharp weapon.

“There were no signs of a struggle, indicating the victim may have been attacked by someone she knew.

“We also believe the victim was attacked from behind, but a post-mortem examination will be conducted tonight to determine the actual cause of death,” he said when met at the scene.

Dr Zahari was seen at the location together with a forensic team to carry out investigations. - February 5, 2026
