THE arrival of the Lunar New Year has transcended ethnic boundaries across Malaysia, serving as a powerful testament to the country’s enduring social fabric.
In a nationwide display of mutual goodwill or concord (Muhibbah), citizens have gathered at temples, open houses, and cultural performances to mark a season defined by harmony and collective prosperity.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, attending the MCA Lunar New Year reception in Kuala Lumpur, highlighted the significance of these cross-cultural interactions.
He said: “I only came to jointly celebrate the Chinese New Year celebration organized by MCA and this is not just one group, but a celebration for all people. I see the celebration is very good and shows our unity.”
The spirit of inclusivity was mirrored in Kedah, where 56-year-old Ong Pei Tan shared festive treats with fellow citizens during her morning exercise routine.
“We also brought oranges to be given to the public here... share the blessings and share the festival, because in Malaysia, for example Chinese New Year, the Malay and Indian communities also celebrate just like Aidilfitri and Deepavali, she told Bernama today.
In Negeri Sembilan, the Si Thian Kong Temple in Kuala Pilah attracted over 5,000 visitors, including international tourists from Singapore, China, and Japan.
Liaw Zi Xhuan, the temple’s media communications director, explained that the site has become a focal point for those seeking blessings for health and fortune.
Similarly, in Kelantan, the Swee Nyet Keung Temple welcomed approximately 1,500 devotees despite inclement weather, proving that traditional observances remain robust even in the country’s more conservative corridors.
The southern gateway of Johor utilised the festive period to bolster the Visit Malaysia 2026 campaign, greeting international arrivals at Senai International Airport with vibrant lion dances.
K. Raven Kumar, the State Unity, Heritage, and Culture Committee Chairman, observed that the diversity of Malaysia’s festive seasons reflects the strength of the people’s unity while strengthening the country’s position as a unique international tourism destination.
In Perak, Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad issued a statement underscoring the necessity of protecting this communal harmony.
“The blessing of this unity is what has been the backbone of Malaysia's strength from before. This gift we must guard, preserve, and defend together so that harmony can continue to flourish and be inherited by future generations,” he stated.
Beyond the formal ceremonies, the essence of the holiday was found in the neighbourhood streets of Perlis and Melaka.
Residents like Ahmad Firdaus Rahman, 32, expressed joy in experiencing the festivities with his family, noting that the presence of various races proved that the spirit of unity remains strong.
This sentiment was echoed by Tan Geak Loi and Siti Berenee Yahaya at a local open house, where they emphasised that such traditions are vital for preventing prejudice and fostering closer ties between neighbours.
As the nation enters the new lunar cycle, the widespread participation of the Malay, Indian, and indigenous communities in Chinese New Year rituals suggests that Malaysia’s diversity remains its most significant strategic asset. - February 17, 2026
