THE question of who will assume the chairmanship of Perikatan Nasional (PN) is set to be resolved at a central PAS meeting on Sunday, party president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang confirmed.
Speaking after delivering a Kuliah Dhuha at Masjid Rusila, Abdul Hadi said the meeting will not only deliberate on a new PN chairman to succeed Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, who stepped down at the end of December, but may also address the appointment of a new Leader of the Opposition in Parliament.
“We will discuss and decide on the new PN chairman. It is also possible that the issue of the Opposition Leader in Parliament will be raised. As of now, PAS has not made a decision regarding that post; it may be considered at the Sunday meeting,” he said.
Abdul Hadi, who is also the Member of Parliament for Marang, emphasised that PAS must take decisive steps to safeguard PN, stressing the importance of inclusivity in national governance.
“The most important point in the upcoming discussions is to save PN, because in our view, to govern the country requires involving all parties,” he said.
On the matter of visits from former BERSATU deputy president Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainuddin, Abdul Hadi confirmed the former party leader had met with him. He added that representatives from Muhyiddin’s faction, led by BERSATU Vice President Datuk Dr Mohd Radzi Md Jidin, had also attended discussions.
“At the meeting, both sides — the Hamzah group and Muhyiddin’s group — presented their arguments, and we will work to resolve the issues raised,” Abdul Hadi said.
When asked about Hamzah’s proposal to form a new political party, Abdul Hadi said the decision rests solely with him.
The central PAS meeting on Sunday is expected to play a pivotal role in determining the coalition’s leadership structure and shaping the opposition’s role in Parliament, signalling potential realignments in Malaysian politics. - February 20, 2026
