THE Women, Family and Community Development Ministry reported a total of 1,575 child abuse cases in the last quarter of 2025, encompassing physical, sexual, and emotional abuse, according to figures compiled by the Welfare Department.
The ministry outlined multiple initiatives aimed at early intervention for high-risk families, including counselling services, marriage counselling, parental education, and psychosocial and economic support.
“These efforts can help reduce household-related stress that could potentially lead to child abuse,” the ministry said in a written reply dated Thursday.
In addition, the establishment of a dedicated Child Development Department has strengthened child-focused services, particularly in protection. Advocacy programmes in collaboration with government agencies and civil society organisations have also been implemented to raise awareness and prevent abuse.
More than 128,000 children benefited from these programmes in 2024, while some 83,000 children participated in initiatives last year across 676 schools and 48 children’s activity centres nationwide.
The ministry encouraged those facing child abuse issues to report cases via the 24-hour Talian Kasih 15999 hotline or the Talian Kasih mobile application.
“Success in this area requires a holistic approach from all parties. Everyone must play an active role in ensuring the safety and welfare of our children. The community must also remain vigilant of their surroundings to curb cases of child neglect or abuse,” it said.
The statement was issued in response to a parliamentary query by Sabri Azit (PN–Jerai), who sought details on the total number of child abuse cases recorded in the final quarter of 2025 and the steps undertaken to address the problem. - February 27, 2026
