POLICE have launched an investigation into claims of a conspiracy to topple the government and undermine national stability, reportedly involving a prominent local figure and an international media agency.
Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail said the inquiry follows a police report lodged on 26 February.
"I confirm receiving a police report yesterday (Feb 26), and we are conducting an investigation into allegations of an attempt to overthrow the government and sabotage the stability of the country involving an influential local individual and an international media agency," he said.
The investigation is being handled by the Classified Crime Investigation Unit of the Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department's Prosecution and Law Division (D5) and is conducted under Section 124B of the Penal Code, which criminalises any act, directly or indirectly, that is detrimental to parliamentary democracy.
Those found guilty face up to 20 years’ imprisonment.
Mohd Khalid emphasised that the probe is ongoing and urged the public to refrain from speculation while authorities complete their investigation.
"Investigations are ongoing and the public is advised not to speculate while police complete their probe to respect the principles of the criminal justice system," he added.
According to the police report lodged by an editor at the Brickfields police station, which had since gone viral, a prominent family with assets worth billions of ringgit allegedly engaged a London-based firm to pressure Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and MACC Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki.
The family engaged the strategic communications firm, which specialises in influencing national policy and the direction of specific issues in July last year.
The editor claimed that he had met a member of the family concerned to discuss the possibility of collaborating on a biography and a documentary.
However, he claimed that he was invited to a Zoom meeting where the issue of attacking the government was discussed and decided not to pursue the collaboration. - February 27, 2026
