AN 84-year-old man suffered head injuries after a crane toppled onto the roof of an elderly care home in Permatang Tinggi, Bukit Mertajam, today.

Penang Fire and Rescue Department assistant director of operations John Sagun Francis said the crane was believed to have overturned after losing stability while parked on uneven ground.

It is believed to have crashed onto the roof of the building housing elderly residents at about 12.30 pm.

Pusat Jagaan Rumah Sejahtera Permatang Tinggi houses 49 people, including 38 residents and 11 workers.

The injured resident, identified as Chin Ah Leak, also known as Tan Seow Kheng, was taken to hospital by Health Ministry personnel before firefighters arrived at the scene.

The department said the remaining 37 residents and 11 workers, including the crane operator, were unharmed.

Barriers were also erected to prevent members of the public from entering the restricted area.

The situation was brought under control at 1.15 pm, and the operation ended at 1.45 pm. – October 10, 2026
