THE government has held discussions on the establishment of a Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) to investigate the Chief Commissioner of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), Tan Sri Azam Baki, regarding his alleged share ownership.

Confirming the matter, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the government would issue a statement soon.

“We discussed it (in the Cabinet meeting) earlier. There will be a statement (to be issued) later,” he said briefly when met at the Bandar Kajang Jamek Mosque on Friday.

Previously, DAP Secretary-General Anthony Loke was reported to have proposed in a Cabinet meeting that an RCI be established to investigate allegations of the existence of a ‘corporate mafia’ as well as share ownership issues.

In addition, DAP advisor Lim Guan Eng also announced that the party would hold a special congress on July 12 to allow delegates to decide whether their leaders should resign from government positions or not.

However, he said the special congress might be brought forward if the Cabinet meeting rejected the proposal to establish an RCI to investigate allegations that the MACC was in cahoots with the 'corporate mafia'.

Earlier, the government announced the establishment of a Special Committee of Inquiry into the issue of Azam's share ownership, chaired by Attorney-General Tan Sri Mohd Dusuki Mokhtar.
