HIS Royal Highness Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah of Selangor has officially raised the state flag atop a 120-metre flagpole at Dataran Selangor, a structure now acknowledged by the Malaysia Book of Records as the tallest flagpole in Southeast Asia.
The installation, a landmark in the heart of Shah Alam, is set to become a defining symbol of pride and unity for the people of Selangor and Malaysia.
The steel flagpole tapers from a base diameter of 2.8 metres to 1.2 metres at its peak, and is accompanied by architectural features including ornate gates, layered lattice panels, and floral motifs, giving the site a visually striking and culturally meaningful presence.
The Selangor flag itself measures 15 by 30 metres, weighing around 50 kilograms, and is made from high-quality knitted polymesh material designed to withstand wind and adverse weather conditions.
In his address at the ceremony, Sultan Sharafuddin highlighted the significance of the landmark.
“This 120-metre flagpole at Dataran Selangor is another symbol of pride for the state and marks a new landmark in Shah Alam. When conceptualising its construction, I hoped it would serve as a symbol of unity for the people of Selangor, while fostering respect for the flag and a love for our state,” he said.
The Sultan also noted the timing of the inauguration, which coincided with his late father’s birthday.
“I chose 8 March for the opening of this flagpole to coincide with the birth anniversary of my late father, Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah. He was instrumental in developing Shah Alam and declaring it the state capital of Selangor in 1978,” he added.
During the event, Sultan Sharafuddin witnessed the presentation of the Malaysia Book of Records certificate to the State Secretary, Datuk Dr Ahmad Fadzli Ahmad Tajuddin, by MBR Chief Operating Officer Jwan Heah.
The ceremony also included the official naming of the project site as Dataran Selangor, or The Selangor Square, reflecting the grandeur and identity of the state.
The Sultan further decreed that the Malaysian national flag, the Jalur Gemilang, would be raised atop the flagpole for ten days during the annual Independence Day celebrations on 31 August, symbolising patriotism and reinforcing unity between Selangor and other Malaysian states.
The event was attended by Raja Muda Selangor, Tengku Amir Shah, and the Selangor Menteri Besar, Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari. Sultan Sharafuddin also inaugurated the flagpole with a commemorative plaque, officially recognising Dataran Selangor as Southeast Asia’s tallest flagpole.
“This flagpole embodies both the historical significance and modern identity of Selangor, serving as a beacon of unity and pride for all citizens,” Sultan Sharafuddin added. - March 8, 2026
