A LORRY driver has pleaded not guilty in the Magistrates’ Court here to a charge of causing injury to his wife during a domestic dispute allegedly triggered by a damaged phone charger.
The accused, Ahmad Tajul Kushri Ahmad Tajul Ariffin, 48, entered the plea after the charge was read before Magistrate Arun Noval Dass.
He is accused of voluntarily causing hurt to his 44-year-old wife at a residence in Peserai at about 5pm on 6 March.
The charge was framed under Section 323 of the Penal Code, read together with Section 326A of the same law, which concerns offences involving domestic violence.
Under Section 323, an offender may face up to one year’s imprisonment or a fine of up to RM2,000, or both upon conviction. When read together with Section 326A, the penalty may be doubled.
According to the case facts presented in court, the altercation reportedly began when the accused accused his wife of failing to properly care for their children and damaging household items, including a mobile phone charger.
The argument allegedly escalated when the accused struck the victim with a deodorant bottle and slapped her across the face. The assault reportedly caused injuries and left the victim experiencing hearing difficulties after being hit with the glass bottle.
The prosecution was conducted by Deputy Public Prosecutor Firdaus Ruslan, while the accused was represented by lawyer Tan Song Yan from the National Legal Aid Foundation.
The court allowed the accused bail of RM2,500 and ordered him to report to the nearest police station once every three weeks.
The case has been fixed for mention on 5 May for the submission of documents and confirmation of legal representation. - March 11, 2026
