KOTA KINABALU – The United Progressive Kinabalu Organisation (Upko) has called for a political ceasefire between Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin and opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
Upko president Datuk Wilfred Madius Tangau said instead of forming grand coalitions or toppling the government, politicians and parties should compete to offer better policies and delivery of service.
“Last year has caused many Malaysians to be confused, frustrated and disillusioned with multi-party competition and even democracy.
“As allies become enemies and vice-versa, voters feel that democracy is becoming meaningless when power struggles between political elites do not benefit ordinary citizens.
“Voters losing faith in democracy is extremely dangerous. Comes GE15, they may simply vote for outsider politicians riding on hatred and bigotry like Donald Trump. Or they may just stay at home on polling day.”
Tangau in his statement apologised to Malaysians for failing to compete professionally in 2020.
He proposed that:
1. No federal or state election except for Sarawak’s state election that can be held as late as August 5.
2. Parliamentary/legislative reforms to allow meaningful roles in law-making and policy-shaping for opposition lawmakers and government backbenchers.
3. Formal recognition of a shadow cabinet at federal and state levels.
4. Equitable constituency development fund (CDF) for all government and opposition lawmakers.
5. Preparation for free and fair GE15 and state elections that include facilities for extensive absentee voting and digital campaigning.
