THE Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) said the hot weather status in Padang Terap, Kedah, is at level two (heat wave) with daily maximum temperatures between 37 and 40 degrees Celsius.

MetMalaysia in a statement today said that 14 areas in Peninsular Malaysia are at level one (alert), including the entire Perlis, as well as the areas of Baling, Sik, Pendang, Pokok Sena, Kubang Pasu, Pulau Langkawi, Kuala Muda and Bandar Baharu in Kedah.

Similar warnings were also issued for the Northeast (Penang), Hulu Perak and Kuala Kangsar (Perak), Jerantut (Pahang) and Rembau (Negeri Sembilan).

According to the statement, the heat wave level is a daily maximum temperature between 37 and 40 degrees Celsius for at least three consecutive days, and for the alert level, the daily maximum temperature is between 35 and 37 degrees Celsius for at least three consecutive days.

Meanwhile, through a post on its Facebook page, MetMalaysia also recorded a Happy World Meteorological Day greeting, which is celebrated today with the theme 'Monitoring Today, Protection Tomorrow'.

According to the department, the theme emphasises the importance of accurate and up-to-date meteorological monitoring technology and efforts in protecting life and the environment for future generations.

“Through the weather monitoring carried out today, we can make more effective predictions, issue early warnings and take swift action to reduce the risk of natural disasters and the effects of climate change.

MetMalaysia also celebrated the 68th Anniversary of Malaysia's membership in the World Meteorological Organisation (WHO), an achievement that reflects the country's commitment to contributing to global cooperation for the well-being of society and the sustainability of the earth.

In a separate message, MetMalaysia Director-General Dr Mohd Hisham Mohd Anip expressed his appreciation and gratitude to all the department's dedicated and committed employees in carrying out the monitoring and releasing of weather balloons every day.

“In the hustle and bustle of daily tasks, while many are sleeping in their dreams, MetMalaysia employees remain steadfast in carrying out their trust, monitoring and forecasting the weather to ensure the safety and well-being of the country is always maintained,” he said.

He also expressed special appreciation to weather and climate researchers who contributed to the understanding of past weather patterns, thus guiding efforts towards a more sustainable future. – March 22, 2026
