Govt honours meteorologists on World Meteorological Day amid growing climate risks

DEPUTY Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has paid tribute to the nation’s meteorologists, recognising their critical role in safeguarding lives through accurate weather monitoring and timely forecasts as the country marks World Meteorological Day 2026.

In a message issued in conjunction with the global observance, Zahid said the work carried out by meteorological experts, particularly those at the Malaysian Meteorological Department, remains vital in ensuring public safety amid increasingly complex weather patterns.

“Today, I would like to record my appreciation to all meteorologists, especially the personnel of the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia), for their commitment in continuously monitoring, analysing and delivering weather information to us,” he said in a Facebook post.

He stressed that every forecast and warning issued serves a crucial purpose in protecting lives and property, underscoring the growing importance of meteorological science in national disaster preparedness.

Marking this year’s theme, “Monitoring Today, Protecting Tomorrow”, Zahid, who also chairs the National Disaster Management Committee, said the role of meteorology has become increasingly significant in ensuring that present-day decisions can mitigate future risks to the public and environment.

In a separate statement, the Malaysian Meteorological Department said the theme highlights the importance of advanced technology and precise, up-to-date monitoring systems in protecting both people and ecosystems for future generations.

“Through the weather monitoring conducted today, we are able to produce more effective forecasts, issue early warnings and take swift action to reduce the risks of natural disasters and the impacts of climate change,” the department said.

The observance also coincides with Malaysia’s 68th anniversary as a member of the World Meteorological Organization, reflecting the country’s continued commitment to international cooperation in climate science and environmental protection.  - March 23, 2026
