PRIME MINISTER Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has called for a measured and carefully planned approach to the proposed redevelopment of Kampung Bahagia in Sabah, stressing that large-scale projects must align with broader state needs and national development strategies.
Speaking after visiting fire victims at a temporary evacuation centre at the People’s Housing Project hall in Batu Sapi near Sanadakan n Sabah on Wednesday, Anwar said the proposal to transform the water settlement into a structured housing development remains under consideration and has been discussed with Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor.
“All of this needs to be discussed first because the project is quite large and requires careful planning.
“I do not think it is appropriate for us to take an immediate approach given the needs of the state. So, I ask for a little patience, but without delaying the project,” he said.
His remarks signal a cautious stance amid calls for swift redevelopment following safety concerns in the area.
The proposal was previously raised by Deputy Human Resources Minister and Batu Sapi Member of Parliament Datuk Khairul Firdaus Akbar Khan, who suggested replacing the existing settlement with a more organised housing scheme to prevent recurring incidents.
Khairul was reported to have said that the government is in the process of gazetting Kampung Bahagia as a recognised village, covering an area of approximately four hectares.
Anwar’s intervention underscores the government’s emphasis on balancing urgency with due diligence, as authorities weigh redevelopment plans aimed at improving safety and living conditions without rushing into decisions that could have long-term implications for the state. - April 23, 2026
