A 19-YEAR-OLD college student was charged with the murder of Nurfisya Zulkifly, also 19, in Ketereh, Kelantan, at the Magistrate’s Court in Kota Bharu today.

The accused, Muhammad Hazim Muhammad, acknowledged the charge by nodding as it was read before Magistrate Rais Imran Hamid.

However, no plea was recorded as murder cases fall under the jurisdiction of the High Court.

He is accused of causing the death of Nurfisya Zulkifly in an incident alleged to have taken place between 11.40 pm on 30 April and 12.20 am on 1 May along Jalan Pengkalan Piah in Ketereh.

The charge is brought under Section 302 of the Penal Code, which carries the mandatory death penalty, or imprisonment of up to 40 years if the death sentence is not imposed. In such cases, the court may also impose a minimum of 12 strokes of the cane.

The prosecution was led by Kelantan state prosecution director Wan Azimah Yaacob, assisted by deputy public prosecutors Muhammad Nadzir Abdullah and Ahmad Naabil Mohamed Asri, while the accused was represented by counsel Mohd Alias Ibrahim.

During proceedings, the prosecution sought a mention date for case management to obtain further forensic and expert reports required for the investigation.

The court fixed 2 July for mention and case management. - May 12, 2026
