A RETIRED police officer was found dead inside his home in Taman Bukit Katil after neighbours became alarmed by a foul smell coming from the property following several days without seeing him.

Melaka Tengah police chief Christopher Patit said authorities received information regarding the incident at about 6.30pm on Sunday before a police team was dispatched to the scene.

He said firefighters were later called in to force open the door of the residence, where officers discovered the 64-year-old man lying face down in the living room.

“The Fire and Rescue Department was called to break open the door of the house before the 64-year-old man was found lying face down in the living room.

“Initial examinations by the investigating officer and Hospital Melaka found that the man had died, and physical checks on the deceased revealed no elements of crime,” he said in a statement.

According to Christopher, neighbours informed police that the victim, who lived alone, had not been seen leaving his house for between four and five days before a strong unpleasant odour was detected from the residence.

A post-mortem conducted at Hospital Melaka later confirmed that the cause of death was linked to heart complications.

Christopher said police were currently working to trace and contact the victim’s next of kin. - May 19, 2026
