Uploading videos: Social media users need to understand limits, avoid disrupting investigations – Fahmi

THE Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and the Ministry of Communications are ready to help increase awareness and understanding among social media platform users to be more careful about uploading crime-related content that could disrupt investigations by authorities.

Communications Minister, Datuk Fahmi Fadzil, said he has taken note of the concerns expressed by the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) regarding the trend of spreading crime incident videos, including dashcam recordings on social media.

“We take note because we know that criminal investigations are under PDRM.

“Sometimes, especially the distribution of dashcam videos, there are elements that may offend the victim’s family, and we need to be sensitive about this,” he said.

He was commenting on a police statement on the trend of distributing crime recordings on social media, which is feared could affect investigations.

According to him, the ministry will strengthen the aspect of digital literacy so that social media users better understand their responsibilities when sharing content.

“We will increase digital literacy to ensure that users of social media platforms also understand that although they can upload content, in some matters, if there is an element of investigation, we do not want it to be disrupted,” he said.

Fahmi said media organisations usually understand the limits in uploading content, but ordinary users may not be too clear about this matter.

Yesterday, Bukit Aman Crime Prevention and Community Safety Department (JPJKK) Director, Datuk Noor Hisam Nordin, reminded the public to be more responsible before uploading video recordings regarding criminal incidents on social media because it can affect investigations, in addition to having legal implications. – May 24, 2026
