A FORMER Lembaga Tabung Haji (TH) chairman and a former Treasury secretary-general have been released from Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) custody as investigations linked to the pilgrims’ fund’s royal commission of inquiry (RCI) report continue.
The two men were released this morning after being remanded on Aug 27.
A source said investigators had completed recording statements from both men, who are in their 60s and hold the titles “Datuk Seri” and “Tan Sri”.
The former TH chairman, who is also a politician, and the former Finance Ministry official were arrested at MACC headquarters in Putrajaya on Aug 26.
The case is being investigated under Section 23 of the MACC Act 2009, which concerns using office or position to obtain gratification.
A former TH chief executive officer was previously detained and remanded in connection with the same investigation.
Before that, MACC detained seven people, including a shipping company chief executive officer, two company directors and four former members of TH’s senior management.
The investigations involve separate allegations concerning documents containing false information, a proposed investment in a construction company and a hotel lease in Saudi Arabia.
The arrests and releases form part of a wider MACC investigation following the declassification of the 252-page RCI report into TH’s management and operations between 2014 and 2020.
The report was declassified and released publicly on July 29, four years after it was completed.
Among its recommendations was an amendment to the Tabung Haji Act 1995 to prevent active politicians from serving as directors of TH and its subsidiaries, as well as requiring board members to possess relevant expertise.
The investigation remains ongoing, with MACC yet to announce whether further action will be taken against those whose statements have been recorded. - September 1, 2026
