A SPECIAL meeting of PAS central committee leaders has reportedly raised serious concerns over deepening instability within Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu), with discussions said to include the possibility of severing political ties between the two Perikatan Nasional component parties.
Sources familiar with the meeting tod Berita Harian that PAS state commissioners presented reports indicating growing grassroots support within Bersatu for the “Team Reset” faction aligned with former Bersatu deputy president Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin.
The developments were said to have triggered fears among PAS leaders that prolonged infighting in Bersatu could weaken Perikatan Nasional machinery at the grassroots level and undermine preparations for the 16th General Election.
The meeting, chaired by PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang, began at 11am on Sunday at Sri Iman, the official residence of Terengganu Menteri Besar Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar in Kuala Terengganu.
According to sources, PAS state leaders also submitted political assessments on the condition of PN in their respective states, including the standing of Bersatu’s grassroots structure and the level of support for Team Reset.
Reports presented during the meeting allegedly painted an increasingly unfavourable picture for the current Bersatu leadership under Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, with claims that numerous party divisions and branches had been dissolved amid the ongoing internal power struggle.
“There are concerns that the prolonged internal conflict within Bersatu could affect the confidence of PN supporters and weaken coordination among component parties,” a source said.
The special meeting reportedly focused heavily on the deteriorating relationship between PAS and Bersatu, particularly the tensions involving Muhyiddin’s leadership and the Team Reset faction.
Sources said PAS leaders were now considering whether political cooperation with Bersatu remained viable if the tensions continued unresolved.
“Any final decision has not yet been made and the matter remains under internal review and assessment.
“Any major action relating to this issue must go through several important processes, including discussions at the PAS Syura Ulama Council meeting as the party’s highest decision-making body before any official decision is taken,” the source said.
The meeting also reportedly discussed tensions that surfaced during the PN Supreme Council meeting on 16 May regarding applications by four other Malay-based parties seeking to join the coalition.
According to sources, PAS representatives at the meeting deliberately adopted a conciliatory approach and avoided escalating disputes with Bersatu leaders to prevent the situation from becoming “more heated”.
Leaders were also said to have discussed controversy surrounding the withdrawal of statutory declarations involving two Bersatu elected representatives in Negeri Sembilan, which allegedly occurred without consultation or prior notification to PN’s central leadership.
“The action was viewed as disrespecting the spirit of consensus and consultation within the coalition,” the source said.
Relations between PAS and Bersatu have become increasingly strained after Abdul Hadi reportedly stated that PAS would reassess cooperation with Bersatu following several actions by the party that were viewed as violating the spirit of solidarity within Perikatan Nasional.
The PAS leadership is understood to regard a series of recent moves by Bersatu as increasingly damaging to coalition unity at a critical stage ahead of GE16. - May 25, 2026
