A TRADER accused of causing the death of an 18-year-old teenager in a tragic road accident that drew widespread public attention has claimed trial in the Magistrate’s Court in Kuala Terengganu to a charge of dangerous driving.
Asrizal Hisham Khalid, 43, pleaded not guilty to driving a Volkswagen GTI in a manner deemed dangerous to the public, resulting in a collision that caused the death of Wah Han Keong, 18.
According to the charge, the incident occurred at approximately 3.36pm on May 19 along Jalan Losong Feri.
The accused was charged under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which carries a prison sentence of between five and 10 years and a fine ranging from RM20,000 to RM50,000 upon conviction.
The offence also carries a mandatory disqualification from holding or obtaining a driving licence for a minimum period of five years from the date of conviction.
Magistrate Sharifah Amirda Shasha Amir Shariffuddin allowed the accused bail of RM10,000 with one surety and imposed an additional condition that his driving licence be suspended until the conclusion of the trial.
The court fixed August 3 for further mention of the case.
The prosecution was conducted by Deputy Public Prosecutor Ameena Azzuhriyyah Ahmad, while the accused was represented by counsel from the National Legal Aid Foundation (YBGK).
The prosecution stems from a fatal collision that occurred when a Volkswagen GTI carrying five family members reportedly lost control before crashing into a Public Works Department (JKR) road structure located on a road divider.
Investigators previously stated that the vehicle subsequently veered into the opposite carriageway and collided with a van carrying the victim and his father.
The impact caused the JKR pole to collapse and penetrate the van, fatally injuring the teenager.
The incident sparked widespread public concern due to the unusual and catastrophic nature of the crash, with the victim's family later calling for justice and indicating they were considering legal action.
The case is expected to draw continued attention as proceedings move towards trial. - June 3, 2026
